Contributed by Liliya Sazonova, Bulgaria National VAW Monitor The name of this year's 16 Days Campaign - Advance Human Rights ‹—› End Violence Against Women focuses public attention on the state’s responsibilities for implementing international documents in the fields of prevention of and protection against violence against women.
In this regard, the reality in Bulgaria shows that legislation regulating gender–based violence has been adopted – the Law on Protection against Discrimination (in force since January 2004), the Law on Countering Trafficking in Human Beings (in force since 2004), the Law on Protection against Domestic Violence (in force since March 2005). Furthermore, the executive power adopted two National Programs: the National Program on Countering Trafficking in Human Beings and Protection of Victims and the National Program on Prevention and Protection against Domestic violence. Their implementation and monitoring involve the engagement of the executive power on all levels as well as the engagememt of the non-governmental sector.
We invite all governmental and non-governmental organizations as well as other bodies to provide us with information about their initiatives in the framework of the 16-days campaign.
