The Law on Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms obliges the Protector to investigate violations of human rights and freedoms when violated by the act, action or lack of action of the responsible bodies, and to take actions for their removal and to deal with general issues significant for the protection and improvement of human rights and freedoms.

After putting the Law in effect, Ombudsman’s office – Office of the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms in Montenegro, was opened on the international day of Human rights, 10 December 2003.

A year after the office of Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms was established, 140 cases have been received, however none of them are directly related to violations of children’s or women’s human rights.
