last updated 25 April 2007
In 2002, the Office for the High Commissioner for Human Rights created the Recommended Principles and Guidelines on Human Rights and Human Trafficking. The Guidelines set forth seventeen principles that address the importance of human rights, prevention of trafficking, protection and assistance to victims, and punishment. There are also eleven guidelines for states, IGOS and NGOs that address various aspects of trafficking, including the promotion of human rights, prevention of trafficking, identification of victims and perpetrators, adequate legislation, law enforcement response, punishment of traffickers, victim assistance, remedies, regional and state cooperation, special measures for victims of child trafficking, information gathering and dissemination, and obligations of peacekeepers, humanitarian personnel and civilian police.
