ABA-CEELI Releases Report on Domestic Violence in Romania

The American Bar Association - Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA-CEELI) has published a report, Domestic Violence in Romania: the Law, the Court System (PDF, 114 pages). ABA-CEELI undertook a project to investigate best practices under the current laws, make recommendations for legal reform, and to carry out a judicial pilot training module in Romania. The report presents the discussions of an inter-sectoral working group that evaluated the Romanian laws on domestic violence. It addresses the definitions of domestic violence and violence against women; describes Romanian and other states' laws; provides a critical review of the Romanian domestic violence legislation and possible remedies; examines practical issues related to domestic violence cases, including, inter alia, mediation, access to free legal aid, and victim protection, and; summarizes the criminal and civil caselaw related to domestic violence.
