Contributed by: Irena Milatovic and Vanja Mikulic, Montenegro National VAW Monitors On 10 March 2007, the Gender Equality Office of the Government of Montenegro and the foundations "Konrad Adenauer Stiftung" and "Eduardo Frei" organized the conference "Women's role in politics and decision-making processes – legal framework." Representatives of political parties, state administration and NGOs participated in the work of the conference.
The following conclusions were adopted at the conference:

State that in Montenegro there are not enough women in decision-making positions and that it is necessary to establish gender partnership and equality in political life;
Remind that Montenegro is in the process of preparation of a new text of the constitution;
Request the assurance of the following rights in the main provisions of the constitution:
• state commitment to manage the equal opportunity policy,
• equality between women and men,
• state of social justice,
• prohibition of direct and indirect discrimination,
• introduction of positive measures and its non-discriminatory character,
• maintainance of achieved rights;
• free choice of spouses to get married, equality during the marriage and divorce, equality in achievement of parental rights and, in particular, the freedom of a woman to decide upon the birth of a child.
Expect that in the realization of activities agreed at the conference the participants will include the representatives of political parties, trade unions, media and NGOs;
Oblige the Gender Equality Office to start implementation of the agreed activities and to submit these conclusions to the presidents of political parties in Montenegro, the Government of Montenegro, the Parliament of Montenegro and the Committee for Gender Equality in the Parliament of Montenegro.
