350 Consultations with abused women have been carried out up to this moment in Burgas.

So far, 44 is the number of cases initiated against perpetrators of violence in the Burgas Court. The news was announced by Diana Videva, a chairperson of “Demetra” Association which defends the interests of women who have become victims of violence.

The most recent research shows that every fourth woman in Burgas is a victim of domestic violence. Among the victims are lawyers, teachers and journalists.

According to Videva, the paradox is that the ladies can rarely make a decision to initiate a case against their husband-abuser. The main reason is that they didn’t want their children to be raised without father. There is, however, another side of this problem – the children become involuntary witnesses of battering and maltreatment, thus they live in an unsecured and violent environment.

A proposal has been made on the part of the women’s organizations, stating that a fund should be created, part of the Law against Domestic Violence, which secures the law itself and the victims of domestic violence.
