Egypt to Establish National Committee to Prevent Human Trafficking

The Council of Ministers in Egypt recently approved a draft presidential decision establishing the National Coordinating Committee to Combat and Prevent Trafficking in Persons. The role of the committee will be to draft a national action plan to combat the issue of human trafficking, to prepare and draft legislation, prepare annual research and reports, and to increase public awareness through media coverage and education. This marks the first step that Egypt has taken to comply with the United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons. In addition to this important step by the Egyptian government, the League of Arab States will hold a conference later this year examining anti-trafficking legislation in Arab countries.
