In 1998, the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia adopted a Declaration on the promotion of gender equality in the decision-making processes.  The Declaration stresses the fact that women's status in Macedonia currently has room for improvement and that there is a need for a more active approach by the government in achieving such improvement.

In 2001, a new draft for amendments and additions to the Law on Elections of Members of Parliament was prepared. The draft was adopted by Parliament on June 14, 2002.   Article 37 of this law prescribes that the each gender should be represented by at least 30% of candidates on the lists for parliament members submitted by political parties. Seeline provides further background on Macedonia's national machinery and legislation.
