In February 1996, the Slovak government passed a resolution creating the Coordination Committee for Women's Issues (CCWI). The CCWI is charged with addressing women's issues in all areas of society, as well as reviewing or initiating draft legislation. The CCWI drew up the National Action Plan for Women in the Slovak Republic, which was approved by the Slovak government on 16 September 1997. The plan addresses a number of policy areas, including violence against women, women's health, gender equality, poverty, NGO support and public awareness. One of the Plan's central goals is to eliminate violence against women by creating shelters for victims, establishing a hotline for victims of domestic violence, petitioning for legislative change, providing educational programs and training, and combating prostitution and trafficking in women and children. Finally, a special counsel has been established to serve in an advisory capacity to the government on the issue of violence against women.

Slovakia issued a response to the United Nations' Division for Advancement of Women's Questionnaire regarding implementation of the Beijing Platform of Action. The U.N. Division for the Advancement of Women has sent a questionnaire (PDF) to all governments requesting information on accomplishments and obstacles to implementing the Beijing Platform for Action. Responses are due by 30 April 2004.
