According to the UN Development Programme, Turkmenistan has formed a National Plan of Action on the advancement of women. Its main target areas are education, health, media, girls, economy, human rights, ecology, the creation of a national mechanism and increased participation of women in decision-making positions. In August 1998, the National Machinery for the Advancement of Women was established to implement the National Plan.

Turkmenistan has not yet submitted a copy of its National Plan of Action to the UN Division for the Advancement of Women. However, on 19 January, 2000, the Turkmen government submitted a response to the United Nations' Division for Advancement of Women's Questionnaire regarding implementation of the National Platform.
