The Bulgarian National Plan was approved by the National Council on Social and Demographic Issues with the Council of Ministers on July 2, 1996. One of the principal objectives of the plan is to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women. The plan lists activities for implementation of the objectives, categorized by long-term and mid-term tasks. The long-term tasks and goals include the development of a National Program Against Crime and implementation of a large-scale sociological survey of crimes against women. Some of the mid-term tasks and goals outlined are condemnation of all forms of violence against women as violations of their rights and fundamental freedoms and provision of better access to information to government units that deal with gender equality and women's rights.
On 24 November 2005, the institutions coordinated their efforts to implement the policy of equal opportunities for men and women and approved the National Action Plan for promoting gender equality for 2006. It is intended to unite the efforts of institutions, implementing the policy of equal opportunities for men and women in all field of the economic, political and social life in the country.The official document includes actions intended to promote gender equality in the access to healthcare, education, decision-making, raising public awareness, measures rooting out stereotypes for men and women’s roles, work with the media, etc.
The Bulgarian government also submitted a response to the United Nations' Division for Advancement of Women's Questionnaire regarding implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action. |
