Contributed by Rada Elenkova, BGRFThe actress Nicole Kidman – a goodwill ambassador of the United Nations- plans to visit Plovdiv in the summer of 2009. The news was announced by Milena Kadieva, who works for the Bulgarian Gender Research Foundation in Plovdiv.
Kadieva was the only Bulgarian at the UN world meeting in New York, dedicated to violence against women. She read a report about violence against women in the Balkans.
The UN initiative "16 days against violence" was begun in order to increase the popularity of the movement and awareness of cases of violence. The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon launched the multi-year “United to End Violence against Women” campaign. For the first time, 20 million dollars has been raised and will be assimilated by the Fund for Financing Projects. One of the major goals of BGRF’s office in Plovdiv is to support the adoption of the draft bill for Gender Equality and the amendments for the Law against Domestic Violence.
