Contributed by Gabriela  Mihova, Macedonia National VAW Monitor

The first empirical research (and the only one so far) on domestic violence was done by the Association for Emancipation, Solidarity and Equality of women (ESE) in 2000. The name of the research was “Gray number of domestic violence cases in the Republic of Macedonia" and the results of the survey were the first scientifically-based data for this problem in our country. The results of the survey were published in the form of a study that contained not only the results of the survey but also an analysis of the problem and the determination of further steps for addressing this serious problem. The authors of the study were Caceva Violeta, Ph.D.,  (head of the Department for Criminology within the Institute for Sociological, Political and Judicial Research) and Ljubica Coneva, Ph.D., (assistant on the survey).

The research itself was used as a tool in the process of drafting legislation for domestic violence in RM. The data from the research stressed the importance of adopting national legislation regarding domestic violence.
