According to Amnesty International, 13-year-old Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow was publicly stoned to death in a stadium in Kismayu, Somalia on 27 October for allegedly committing adultery. When a member of the victim’s family tried to intervene, the perpetrators opened fire, killing one child bystander.

The girl’s father told Amnesty International that she had not committed adultery, but had been raped by three men and then attempted to report the crime to the militia controlling the area. Islamists who carried out the attack have been in control of the southern part of Somalia since August 2008.

In a brief statement, the European Union French presidency denounced the attack. “The French Presidency of the Council of the European Union denounces this particularly heinous execution, which the Islamist insurgents who took control of the city deliberately made public in an utterly despicable manner.” From: Death by stoning in southern Somalia, The EU and Somalia, French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (28 October 2008).

Earlier reports stated that the victim was aged 23, not 13, but this was based on her physical appearance. The girl's father confirmed her age to be 13.
