The UN Calls on the Russian Federation to Adopt a Domestic Violence Law
UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and Violence against Women Yakin Ertürk calls upon Russia to adopt a law on domestic violence.
Ms. Ertürk stated that “violence against women exists in any age or social group”.
Referring to her report on the situation in Russia presented at the UN two years ago, Ms. Ertürk said that, “Annually, violence against women, particularly domestic violence, destroys lives of thousands women in Russia”. Additionally, Ms. Ertürk stated that issues of violence against women and gender discrimination are still not on the agenda of the Russian government. One of her concerns was the weakness of the women’s non-governmental movement in Russia. “Non-governmental agencies are very important because they attract attention to the issue of domestic violence; they provide survivors with the information on the agencies she may refer to”, - Yakin Ertürk stated in the interview.
