last updated June 22, 2007 In recent years, awareness of the problem of trafficking in women has significantly increased, which has lead to greater availability of research and reports on the subject. This section provides a collection of materials that may be useful to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) engaged in work on the issue of trafficking in women. These materials are organized in the following manner:
· General Resources on Trafficking includes reports that discuss the issue of trafficking in women broadly, without focusing on a particular region. These reports may be useful to frame the issue of trafficking generally as a human rights violation and for information about the global dimensions of the problem.
· Reports by Institution includes reports on trafficking that are available from the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the European Union, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
· Reports by Topic includes reports that may be useful resources for nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and may also inform NGO advocacy strategies. Human rights NGOs and intergovernmental organizations have recognized specific areas that must be strengthened in order to ensure effective protection of victims and prosecution of traffickers. For example, this section includes draft standards for the treatment of trafficking victims and strategies to ensure that victims who serve as witnesses are protected. Likewise, this section contains research on legislative reform, which point to particular weaknesses in national legal systems.
· Further On-Line Resources includes links that provide additional information about trafficking and are excellent research gateways.
For a discussion of international and regional law on trafficking, see Trafficking: Law and Policy. Further information about the United Nations system and the European human rights system is also available in the International Law section of this site.
This collection is not an exhaustive list of materials available on the web or elsewhere, nor are reports on the problem of trafficking in women in specific countries included here. Please see the country pages for research and reports on trafficking in women conducted in specific countries of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and of the former Soviet Union (FSU).
