International Treaties

International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights: Succeeded to on 18 January 1994 with no reservations. Entered into force on 17 September 1991. The Optional Protocol was acceded to on 12 December 1994 with no reservations and entered into force on 12 March 1995. The Second Optional Protocol was ratified on 26 January 1995 with no reservations and entered into force on 26 April 1995.

International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights: Succeeded to on 18 January 1994 with no reservations. Entered into force on 18 January 1994.

Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women: Succeeded to on 18 January 1994 with no reservations. Entered into force on 17 February 1994. The Optional Protocol was ratified on 17 Oct. 2003. 

International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination: Succeeded to on 18 January 1994 with no reservations. Entered into force on 17 September 1991.

Convention on the Rights of the Child: Succeeded to on 2 December 1993 with no reservations. Entered into force on 17 September 1991. The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict was ratified on 12 Jan 2004. The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography was ratified on 17 Oct 2003.

Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment: Succeeded to on 12 December 1994. Entered into force on  12 December 1994. Macedonia has neither signed nor ratified the Optional Protocol.

International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families: No action has been taken.

Convention relating to the Status of Refugees: Succeeded to on 18 January 1994 with no reservations. Entered into force on 18 April 1994. The Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees was ratified on the same date.

Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade, and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery: Succeeded to on 18 January 1994 with no reservations. Entered into force on 18 January 1994.

Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children: Signed only on 12 December 2000.

Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: Ratified on 6 March 2002.

ILO Convention C29 Forced Labour Convention: Ratified on 17 November 1991.

ILO Convention C111 Discrimination (Employment & Occupation) Convention: Ratified on 17 November 1991.

ILO Convention C143 Migrant Workers (Supplementary Provisions) Convention: Ratified on 17 November 1991.

ILO Convention C182 Worst Forms of Child Labour: Ratified on 30 May 2002.

Regional Treaties

Statute of the Council of Europe: Macedonia became a member of the Council of Europe on 9 November 1995.

European Social Charter (revised): No action has been taken.

European Convention on the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms: Ratified and entered into force on 10 April 1997 with no reservations. Protocols 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 11 were ratified on 4 Oct 1997. Protocols 12 and 13 were ratified on 13 July 2004. Protocols 9, 10 and 14: No action has been taken.

European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment: Ratified on 6 June 1997 and entered into force on 1 October 1997 with no reservations. Protocol No.1 to the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture: Ratified on 6 June 1997 and entered into force on 01 March 2002 with no reservations. Protocol No.2 to the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture: Ratified on 6 June 1997 and entered into force on 1 March 2002 with no reservations.

(European) Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities: Ratified on 10 April 1997 and entered into force on 1 February 1998 with declarations.
