In May 2008, UNDP trained several regional branches of the Women’s Committee of Uzbekistan to better promote gender equality and end gender discrimination, focusing on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) as the main tool. UNDP wanted to empower the Women’s Committee because it was in the best position to encourage positive changes through the Uzbek government, and it could also help gender issues enter the mainstream in Uzbek society. NGOs were also involved to create change in society and the media. The country’s last report on CEDAW implementation was due August 2008, but there is no news on it yet.Compiled from: United Nations Development Programme, Women's Committees and Empowerment in Uzbekistan (22 May 2008) and Alternative Reporting: a Door to Equality (19 August 2008).
