Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has seen an increase in reports of domestic violence. In the absence of a government funded helpline, organizations have stepped forward to offer their services. The Forum of Women Citizens and Activists for Governance, Democracy, and Development has created an informal victim support helpline run by volunteers using their mobile phones to connect with those in need. Calls to the Forum have multiplied by 10 since the beginning of the pandemic. Activists are urging the Congolese government to respond to the pandemic with a gendered lens and to consider the impact that lockdowns have on women. Notably, the Congolese government has a mere 2,082 social workers to respond to 84 million people.
