El Salvador: Significant Gender Wage Gap Persists in El Salvador
Friday, November 14, 2025 1:35 PM

El Salvador maintains a significant gender wage gap: men earn an average of 24% more than women, according to the Central Reserve Bank. Men make $461.76 a month versus $372.55 for women, and the difference persists even with the same level of education. The gap is widest among people with little schooling, where men earn 36% more. Even among university graduates, women make about $80 less.

The disparity is sharper in rural areas, where women have lower access to formal jobs, earn less, and participate far less in the labor market than men. Women are also concentrated in lower-paying sectors such as commerce, hospitality, domestic services, and manufacturing, while men dominate higher-paid fields like agriculture, construction, transport, and finance. The article emphasizes that closing the wage gap remains an urgent national challenge and a path to stronger economic growth.
