New Report: European Women’s Lobby Presents Recommendations on Combating Rape

On June 18, the
European Women’s Lobby (EWL) presented its “
Barometer on Rape,” a report tracking data and legislation on rape in states that have ratified the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (also known as the
Istanbul Convention). Through the report, EWL aims to show where data collection and legislation is lacking and help states bring their legislation and policies into compliance with the Istanbul Convention. The document gives a report on the progress of each country that has ratified the Convention. The authors focus on rape in particular but encourage states to continue to develop legislation combating all forms of violence against women.
The Barometer on Rape was presented in the
European Parliament and two parliamentarians, Mary Honeyball and Nicole Kiil-Nielsen, spoke of the necessity of European states to address the crime of rape. The report aims to increase ratification and implementation of the Istanbul Convention, and decrease the rate of violence against women throughout Europe.
