The Sport & Rights Alliance has urged FIFA to officially recognize and support the Afghan Women’s National Football Team (AWNT), which continues to be excluded from international competitions due to Taliban-imposed restrictions. For example, the Taliban’s refusal to recognize the team and the lack of financial support have barred them from events like the Women’s World Cup qualifiers. Thus, the Alliance, as well as numerous advocates, including the Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai, have asked FIFA to uphold its anti-discrimination policies and provide the AWNT with the same funding and recognition as other teams as a vital act of resistance and solidarity for Afghan women’s rights.
