The European Court of Human Rights has found that the Italian government violated the rights of a woman and her son by failing to protect them from repeated acts of domestic violence. The violent acts by the woman's husband resulted in the attempted murder of the woman and the death of her son, even after the police responded to multiple domestic violence calls at the woman's home. The court ordered Italy to pay the woman damages and stated that, "[the] violence inflicted upon (them) should be considered as being grounded on sex and that it consequently amounted to a form of discrimination against women."
