A new report entitled Forgotten Sisters- A Report on Violence Against Women with Disabilities: An Overview of its Nature, Scope, Causes and Consequences examines the prevalence of violence against women and girls with disabilities and demonstrates that when gender and disability intersect, violence can take unique forms and have unique causes and consequences. The report indicates that women with disabilities comprise a significant part of the world’s population: more than one billion people live with some form of disability and the female disability prevalence rate is higher than the male disability prevalence rate. It states that women with disabilities who are also marginalized for other reasons such as poverty or as members of a minority or indigenous group can be subjected to particular forms of violence and discrimination.
