New Resource: Gender-Sensitive Monitoring

Penal Reform International (PRI), along with the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT), has introduced a new resource entitled “Women in Detention: A Guide to Gender-Sensitive Monitoring.” The resource allows systems that monitor centers for detention to incorporate a gender perspective into their work, providing an opportunity for the detention centers to address issues of violence against women and girls in detention.

Women in prisons and women who have been suspected of committing criminal activities are often ignored as vulnerable groups which are susceptible to violence. As their gender-specific needs tend to receive less attention than those of women in the “outside” world, PRI and APT are working to bring attention to these issues and find ways to monitor women in detention to help protect them against these dangers.
