Pakistan: Young Girls Traded to Settle Blood Feud Between Tribes
Monday, October 15, 2012 9:45 AM

Authorities in Pakistan launched an investigation of a local tribe tradition, wani, which allows the exchange of unmarried girls to settle feuds. Pakistan’s Supreme Court has received testimony that 13 girls from ages 4 to 13 were given to another tribe in order to settle a blood feud in the district of Dera Bugti. Although these trades are against the law in Pakistan and violators may receive up to seven years in prison and pay a fine of $5,230 (Rs500,000), wani is still practiced in tribal areas.

The Supreme Court has summoned the girls for testimony.
