History of the Gender Alliance for Development Center
Gender Alliance for Development Center (previously known as Women’s Center) was established in 1994 as part of a project of ‘Refleksione’ (Reflections), Women’s Association and funded by the Women’s Program of the Open Society Foundation for Albania (SOROS). In June 1995, the Women’s Center was officially registered as a not-for-profit and non-governmental organization and was re-registered on March 2002 according to the new NGO law in Albania. In May 2004, the Center was registered under its new name, Gender Alliance for Development Center. This new name was created in order to better represent the mission and the activities that the Center is undertaking.

Mission of Gender Alliance for Development Center
Gender Alliance for Development Center is a not-for-profit organization that aims at creating equal opportunities between the sexes through information, studies, advocacy, lobbying and training courses, all of which are approached with a gender
perspective.

The Gender Alliance for Development Center fulfills its mission through:

  • Including the gender perspective in all aspects of the society;
  • Contributiona in drafting of social policies on gender issues in Albania;
  • Gathering, processing and disseminating information on social issues, from a gender perspective;
  • Training different target groups on gender issues;
  • Consolidating the network of collaborators all over Albania by means of systematic work;
  • Increasing participation of women in the decision-making process.

Gender Alliance for Development Center is consolidating itself as a Regional Center on Gender Issues by ensuring sustainability by offering services and creating partnerships, as well as by improving the quality of relations with donors in conformity with the new terms and requirements, in keeping with the mission of the organization. The activities of the Gender Alliance for Development Center are and still continue to be carried out in implementing the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

The Gender Alliance for Development Center achieves its mission through the financial support of its donors, in partnership with Albanian and foreign NPOs, decision-makers as well as taking part of national, local, regional and international networks.

The Gender Alliance for Development Center carries out its activities in the territory of the Republic of Albania and has its residency in Tirana. Its impact is also extended abroad, through implementing common projects with the local, regional and international networking organizations.

The Gender Alliance for Development Center engages in fulfilling its mission, increasing credibility through professional growth, institutional-building and raising self-confidence. Throughout its activities, the Gender Alliance for Development Center is oriented according to the Albanian society’s needs and is open to collaboration, according to its transparency and partnership principles.

Elona Dhembo will be taking on the lead role as the National VAW Monitor for Albania. Since December 2000, Elona has trained many people on topics such as Gender and Reproductive Health, Gender and Education, and Gender and Budgeting. Her past work includes field research in Albania on “Raising and Measuring the Awareness of Gender Violence Among Medical Staff” and media monitoring. Elona is currently a Gender Trainer at the Gender Alliance for Development Center in Tirana as well as an Assistant at the University of Tirana. Elona has worked for two years as a project coordinator of the Gender-oriented Documentation and Information Center.
