Hungary NANE Women's Rights Association was founded in 1994 by eleven volunteers as a non-profit, non-governmental women's organization. It achieved the legal status of "Important Charity Organization for the Public Good" in 1999.
NANE is primarily dedicated to ending human rights violations and the threat of violence against women (VAW) and children through advocacy, personal support services, and public education. The organization's goals include the following:
- To facilitate and promote changes in the laws and legal regulations so that they will be more suited to provide legal protection for women against discrimination and violence;
- To facilitate and encourage the creation of presently missing protocols related to all fields of VAW;
- To improve legal practice so that it will stop discriminating against women; and to empower women to represent their own issues and to name their realities.
NANE operates a hotline for battered women and children, trains service providers, conducts lobbying for legal reforms, publishes books about violence against women, and generally works on increasing public awareness on the issues of domestic violence.
The STOPVAW country page for Hungary is managed by Judit Herman and Julia Spronz. Judit Herman has been with NANE for eight years, as a trainer, staff member and hotline volunteer. She edited three books that concern issues of violence against women. Judit is actively involved in lobbying on the issue of domestic violence. Julia Spronz received a law degree from the Faculty of LAW in ELTE University in 1999. Her thesis an international analysis of gender discrimination in the field of Labor Law Regulations. She has been involved in the issue of domestic violence since 1997 when she took part in a legal counseling program for battered women in Hungarian shelters. In 2002 she joined NANE as a hotline volunteer. At present she is responsible for legal advocacy for victims of VAW in Habeas Corpus Working Group.
