Stop Violence Against Women
Georgia
The Anti-Violence Network of Georgia was established in October 2003.  The founders of the network include seven leaders of the women’s movement in Georgia and members of the Open Society Georgia Foundation Women’s Program community.

The network seeks to contribute to the building of a non-violent society by recording cases of violence against human beings and ensuring an appropriate response, by raising government and public awareness about the problem of domestic violence, by preparing publications, by coordinating anti-violence activities in cooperation with the media, by creating a crisis centers network, and by operating a shelter for the victims of domestic violence.

In 2004 the Network established a crisis center and a shelter for victims of domestic violence, the only shelter of its kind in Georgia.  The assistance provided by the center includes legal consultation and practical advocacy, medical testing/care, psychological assistance and social services.  In order to provide as much help as possible in the area of medical and psychological services, the Network cooperates with the Psycho-rehabilitation Centre for Victims of Torture  and the NGO Equal Opportunities for Children.

As a part of its three years strategy for combating domestic violence, the Open Society Georgia Foundation Women's Program will collaborate with the Anti-Violence Network of Georgia.  The Women's Program will support the Network's further organizational development, the establishment of the network of crisis centers and the maintenance of the shelter.

The Anti-Violence Network of Georgia will take on the responsibilities of the National VAW Monitor for Georgia, including the management of the STOPVAW country page for Georgia.

For more information, please see attached description of the Anti-Violence Network of Georgia.

In its National VAW Monitor role, the Anti-Violence Network will be assisted by Nino Bakakuri, an Expert Consultant working as a staff attorney with the Judges of Georgia Association.  Ms. Bakakuri has been working in the human rights field for six years and has attended conferences on women’s rights, domestic violence and human trafficking.  In 2004, the Open Society Georgia Foundation Women’s Program and the Network of East West Women published a book written by Ms. Bakakuri entitled, Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking: How to Protect Our Rights.
