The Feminist League was established in 1993 and works on a national level.  The main goal of the Feminist League is to promote equality of women and men in all spheres of life: economic, political, social, cultural and within the home.  The Feminist League strives to achieve its goals through the following activities and programs:

  • Library on women’s issues 
  • Research and publication of reports on women’s issues in Kazakhstan
  • Informational support to women’s NGOs and mass media 
  • Monitoring gender-related legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan 
  • Education about women’s issues

  • Preparing the materials on Central Asian countries for the Regional Meeting with UN Special Rapportuer on VAW held  in Almaty, Kazakhstan, 2005
  • Participation in the discussions in 2004-2005 for Kazakhstan’s Gender Equality Strategy for 2006-2016
  • Preparing the materials on women rights  in Kazakhstan for the U.S. Department of State Annual Report, 2005, 2006
  • Participation in compiling and editing of the Shadow Report on Child’s Rights in Kazakhstan,  2006
  • Participation in expert group on developing the draft Law “On Equal Rights and Оpportunities for Women and Men in Kazakhstan”

The Feminist League has also edited the 2004 alternative report of Kazakhstan on the CEDAW convention and Equality of Opportunities magazine (1997-present).  Together with State University of Florida the Feminist League worked on trainings for police on how to assist victims of domestic violence, as well as trainings, “Gender’s measurement of MASS-MEDIA,” for university professors of journalism in Central Asian countries. Currently, the Feminist League is working on advocacy and the lobbying of women’s rights and equalities in the framework of legislation and infrastructure.

Dr. Alma Yessirkegenova,  the current Program Director of the  Women League of Creative Initiative,  will be taking on the lead role as the National VAW Monitor for Kazakhstan.  In 1996-2006, Alma worked in various UN agencies  (UNDP, UNODC, UNIFEM)  in Kazakhstan, Central Asia and CIS countries on issues including gender equality, elimination of violence against women, and the gender dimensions of HIV/AIDS.  In 2002-2004, she coordinated and managed the implementation of the UNIFEM Regional Project “EVAW in Central Asia”  in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan through consultative and operational support provided to 15 NGOs in these countries. She took active part in the drafting of Kazakhstan’s Gender Equality Strategy for 2006-2016  years and in drafting of the Law “On Prevention of Domestic Violence in Kazakhstan.” She provided consultative support to the Feminist League as a volunteer to prepare the   Report on Monitoring Violence Against Women in Kazakhstan as a Crosscutting Issue of Gender Equality in 2006.
