Job Descriptions and Goals
last updated August 31, 2003

It is important that staff are provided with definite job requirements and clear goals. Clear goals help the employee know what is expected of her and when it is expected. In addition, clear goals send employees the message that they are important, useful members of the team and provide them with clear indicators of progress and success. Clear goals also assist management. If management clearly understands the organization's needs, it will be easier to hire people to fulfill those goals, measure employee performance, give employees constructive criticism when those goals are not being met, and release employees who consistently fail to perform as expected.

MAP's Employee Performance Management I and Employee Performance Management II provide excellent discussions of many aspects of employee management, including goal setting, documenting a performance plan, observing and providing feedback, evaluating performance, rewarding performance, and recognizing performance problems. MAP provides additional information on human resources management (identifying staffing needs, hiring new employees, and training new employees), as well as resources on job satisfaction and employee retention.

MAP's Free Basic Guide to Leadership and Supervision, Skills and Practices in Organizational Supervision, and Helping People to Motivate Themselves are excellent resources for supervisors, covering information on how to deal with crisis situations, how to effectively delegate responsibility, and how to hire, train, orient and motivate employees.
