ANNA has been the leader of the Russian movement against violence against women since 1993 when it was established as the first crisis centre in Russia. ANNA introduced violence against women as a pressing social issue and developed new specific terms for describing the phenomenon of violence. Since 1993, 25,000 women came to the crisis centre for psychological or legal help. In April 1997, ANNA’s lawyers and advocates brought the first domestic violence case to court and won. This set a legal precedent for Russia.

In 1998, ANNA established the National Center for the Prevention of Violence. The programs of the Center are implemented within the Russian Federation. ANNA has an administrative office and a separate space for the hotline.

Over 150 regional non-governmental and governmental agencies focused on the issues of violence against women are active members of the ANNA National Network Against Violence.  Centres from other countries also collaborate with our network.

Since 2000, ANNA has been a Russia focal point for the European Network -- WAVE (Women Against Violence Europe)

ANNA has been the main applicant in four international two-year projects (250 000 Euro each) which received support in 1998 – 2005 from European Commission under the programs of TACIS Lien, TACIS, and IBPP. All programs have been successfully realized.

Since 1993, ANNA has produced and distributed over two millions public awareness materials, such as posters, brochures, stickers, safety cards for women, etc.

ANNA has conducted around 150 seminars and training sessions for different organisations and target groups, such as representatives of governmental and non-governmental agencies and four international conferences on trafficking in women and children, sexual and domestic violence against women.

The main objectives of our organization are:

  • To develop awareness of the issues of violence against women in Russia as human rights violation;
  • To develop the national model of support system for women suffering from different forms of violence;

  • To create the environment of zero tolerance to violence against women in the society
