last updated March 22, 2006 Legislation in the Member States of the Council of Europe in the Field of Violence Against Women, prepared in part by Jill Radford, United Kingdom, for the Council of Europe's Steering Committee for Equality Between Men and Women, March 2004 (Doc. EG 2004 2). This report details national legislation dealing with violence against women in 38 of the 45 Council of Europe member states. In 1995, the Council requested member states to complete a questionnaire on relevant legislation, and subsequent research completed by the Council allowed for a survey of the varying legislation of member states. The report consists of two volumes, ending with a list of good practices and effective legislation prohibiting violence against women. Pages 171-175 in Volume II contain information about the Ukraine.

Women's Work: Discrimination Against Women in the Ukrainian Labor Force, Human Rights Watch, August 2003. (PDF, 52 pages). (In Ukrainian). This report examines discrimination against Ukrainian women in job recruitment in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Lviv. The report looks at the effect of gender-specific job advertising, discrimination against women during interviews, promotions and salary raises, and the prevalence of sexual harassment.

Human Traffic, Human Rights: Redefining Victim Protection, Anti-Slavery International, 2002. (PDF, 12 pages). This report describes mechanisms for assisting victims of trafficking, as well as obstacles to successful prosecutions, in ten countries, including Ukraine.
Women 2000 - An Investigation into the Status of Women's Rights in Central and South-Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States, International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights, 5 November 2000. (PDF, 20 pages). This report discusses domestic violence, sexual abuse of women, and sexual exploitation of women from a legal point of view, pointing out current legislation when available. Information on violence against women begins on page 15.
A Form of Slavery: Trafficking in Women in OSCE States, International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights, 19 June 2000 (PDF, 91 pages). This report is based on information gathered in the region through questionnaires and contains data on such issues as existing legislation, government policies and NGO initiatives, existing victim support services and research for 29 countries, including Ukraine.

This report documents the trafficking of women for the commercial sex industry as a human rights violation in both Moldova and Ukraine. The report analyzes the mechanisms of trafficking in both countries and the NGO and governmental response to the problem, including information on Moldovan and Ukrainian law. The report also addresses the obligations of the Moldovan and Ukrainian government under international law.
Domestic Violence in Ukraine, The Advocates for Human Rights, December 2000. (PDF, 51 pages). This report documents domestic violence as a human rights violation in Ukraine. The report analyzes the Ukrainian legal system, including criminal law and forensic regulations, family law, housing law and draft legislation on domestic violence. The report includes information on the police response to domestic violence and gives an overview of the services that are available to Ukrainian women. The report also addresses Ukraine's obligations under international law
