The Committee expressed alarm over the fact that sex and violent crimes against women more than doubled between 1988 and 1993. The Committee also noted with concern the increasing unemployment and prostitution among women and girls. The Committee urged the government to take measures to provide female victims of violence with appropriate protection and services as well as reintegrate prostitutes into society.
In its comments on Hungary's Fourth and Fifth Periodic Reports, given on 20 August 2002, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women suggested the following measures be taken to achieve further equality between women and men: the inclusion of a specific clause in legislation on a right to non-discrimination on the grounds of sex as well as implementation of effective enforcement of prohibition on discrimination based on sex; the introduction of specific legislation regarding domestic violence and recognition that domestic violence constitutes the violation of the human rights of women; the establishment of shelters and programs to provide redress and protection for victims of domestic violence; training for officials to ensure sensitivity to violence against women; to reform its law to define sexual crimes as crimes against violation of women's rights; to define the crime of rape as sexual intercourse without consent.
Hungary's Sixth Periodic Report under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women was due on 3 September 2002 and is now OVERDUE.
