  • Concluding observations of the Committee (French) (Spanish)
  • The Committee acknowledged the economic crisis resulting from the country’s transition to a democratic market-oriented society and also ecological crises as factors, which were impeding the implementation of the Convention. The Committee praised the Ukraine Government for holding parliamentary hearings in 1995 to discuss the issues related to the Convention and viewed this as an indication of the Convention’s importance within the Government. The Government is commended for making commitments at the Beijing Conference on issues relating to family life problems faced by women as a consequence of economic transition and the adoption of a new constitution guaranteeing equality of men and women in all aspects of life. However, among concerns of the Committee was the finding that no effort had been made to combat cultural and social stereotypes of women and men. The Committee found there was no clearly formulated policy on women and questioned whether parliamentary bodies were committed to eliminating discrimination against women. Other labor-related concerns were the low proportion of women in decision-making positions, overprotective labor legislation, and high unemployment among women. The Committee also had concerns regarding the health of women.
