Increases in Violence against Women in Afghanistan

An independent human rights commission in Afghanistan is reporting an increase of violence against women since last year, including 265 cases of forced marriage with over half of those cases of women under the legal age of eighteen. Poverty is often the root cause of the marriages. Cases of domestic violence also has increased within the last year. Parliament will be debating and voting upon a new law against forced marriage and domestic violence, currently being drafted.
