The Committee commended the Ukraine Government for submitting its report on time but acknowledged that the report failed to document how the Government sought to implement the Covenant. The Committee also applauded the Government’s adoption of the new Ukraine Constitution, which legally sanctions human rights and individual freedoms. The Committee expressed concern regarding women’s rights in the areas of social equality, domestic violence, and the trafficking of women. The Committee remained concerned about the low level of representation of women in Parliament and in senior positions in both the public and private sectors in light of the States positive obligation under articles 3 and 26 to improve the representation of women in these sectors. Further, the Committee underlined the ongoing problem of domestic violence in the country and suggested the Government take positive steps through legislative reform, police training, and sensitization of the population to protect women against domestic violence. Finally, the Committee expressed concern about the trafficking of women in Ukraine and recommended the Government take steps to prosecute and punish those responsible for the crime, as in accord with article 8 of the Covenant.
