  • The Committee commented on four issues involving violence against women or problems of women in its statement on 1 November 2001. The issues involved trafficking in women, rape, domestic violence, unwanted pregnancies, and the traditional roles of women. Regarding the problem of trafficking, the Committee recommended legislation including sanctions to directly combat this practice. The Committee was concerned about the incidence of rape and that domestic violence was not acknowledged to be a problem. It recommended that effective measures be taken to specifically combat marital rape, that the government organize an effective information campaign to educate women on their rights, and that the government collect data regarding all types of violence against women. Regarding unwanted pregnancies, the Committee recommended that the government implement family planning programs in order to decrease the instances of women using life-threatening abortions as a remedy for their situation. Lastly, the Committee recommended the Azerbaijani government make efforts to increase the participation of women in public life and implement programs to overcome the traditional attitudes regarding the roles of women.
