  • Concluding observations of the Committee (French) (Spanish)
  • The Committee welcomed the Action Programme for Women, which includes curbing violence against women among its objectives. The Committee noted that recent restrictions placed on abortions excluded economic and social grounds for performing abortions, and it expressed concern that women would consequently resort to unsafe and risky abortions. The Committee also regretted that family planning services were not provided in the public health care program. The Committee also expressed concern over the rise in domestic violence and trafficking of young women, noting the absence of regulations on sexual harassment, the lack of shelters for victims of family violence and the lack of counseling for victims. The Committee expressed concern that women did not fully enjoy the right to work, noting that equal pay was not respected. It also noted discriminatory practices in employment, such as asking women candidates to take pregnancy tests. The Committee recommended that every effort be made to ensure women's right to health, including family planning services, counseling on safe contraceptive alternatives and sex education for school children. The Committee recommended that sexual harassment be prohibited by law, and that shelters and counseling be provided for all victims of family violence. It also suggested that the discriminatory citizenship law, which differentiates between women and men in granting citizenship to foreign-born spouses, be abolished. Finally, it recommended that the right to work be fully protected for women.
