The Committee welcomed government efforts to address the social, economic and cultural problems caused by the transition to a market economy and democratic political system. The Committee expressed concern, however, over the absence of a law on minorities and the discrimination faced by the Roma. The Committee recommended that the Romanian government take steps to ensure the Roma's right to education and right to take part in cultural life, address the problem of abandoned street children and ensure that the Romanian Human Rights Institute increase its focus on economic, social and cultural rights in future work.
