International Project on the Prevention of Trafficking in Human Beings in Russia

Karelia, in cooperation with Moscow and the Astrakhan Region, will participate in the international project on the prevention of trafficking in human beings in Russia. The project is being funded by the European Commission. The seminar on the project implementation was held on June 28, 2006 in Karelia. 

According to Marina Melnikova, the Project Expert, work will be focused mainly on risk groups, such as youth and labour migrants.

Alberto Andriani, Project Coordinator, stated that Karelia has the longest borderline with the countries of the European Union. Large numbers of people from Russia, the former Soviet Union and the countries of Asia and Africa get through this border seeking jobs in the West. The majority of them have already been involved in trafficking: according to experts, each year about 120,000 women and children are trafficked to the countries of the Western Europe for sexual exploitation.
