The U.S. Department of State and Eurasianet report that, in August 2003, the Kyrgyz parliament passed a law criminalizing trafficking in persons. A draft of this law is available on Legislationonline here.  Trafficking perpetrators may be sentenced to prison terms ranging from three to 20 years.  

In 2003, the Kyrgyz government passed a law on domestic violence. The new law provides definitions for domestic violence, physical domestic violence, psychological family abuse and sexual violence. Article 6 outlines the rights of the victims of domestic violence, which includes protection orders. It also sets forth the responsibilities of law enforcement, prosecutors, courts, state institutions and NGOs.

In addition, a draft law on gender equality has been written. The draft law defines direct and indirect discrimination, equal opportunities, equal rights, equal responsibility, gender equality and gender equity. It provides for equality in several areas, including property, social security, job choice, wages and social benefits.
