National Strategy for Reduction of Domestic Violence Against Women for 2007-2009 Contributed by Vilana Pilinkaite-Sotirovic, Lithuania National VAW Monitor
In 2006, the Ministry of Social Security and Labour finally drafted the National Strategy for Reduction of Domestic Violence Against Women for 2007-2009 . The Strategy includes important measures to effectively start solving the problems of domestic violence in Lithuania. The draft suggests legal amendments to the Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure Code in order to change the currently existing private accusation practices in the cases of domestic violence, and apply state accusation in any case of domestic violence. Regardless of the legal measures, the National Strategy aims to develop a complex system of legal, social and psychological support for victims of domestic violence, introduce measures to reduce their social isolation, organize their rehabilitation, introduce alternative measures for perpetrators and encourage society to resist domestic violence. For this purpose the Government of Lithuania plans to allocate annual funding up to 1,000,000 litas (381,854 USD). The coordinating body of the implementation of the National Strategy is the Ministry of Social Security and Labour. The Ministries of Justice, Interior, Education and Science, Health and others are involved in implementing the measures of the National Strategy.
