PRESENTATION OF THE REPORT ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF CEDAW IN THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION
The report on the implementation of the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in the Russian Federation was presented on July 28, 2006 in Petrozavodsk, Karelia. The Report is the outcome of two years of research work by the ABA / CEELI NGO in the framework of the Women’s Human Rights Program. The partner in the research is Karelia Center for Gender Studies; the research was based in Petrozavodsk.
Representatives of governmental institutions and non-governmental agencies, such as the Committee on Status of Women of Karelia, SAMPO Center for Family and Children, and the Ministry of the Interior, participated in the presentation.
Julia Antonova, Director of the ABA/CEELI Program, spoke on gender policy and the international obligations of Russia in terms of CEDAW implementation. Lyudmila Yakhontova, an expert from ABA, St. Petersburg, made a presentation on gender discrimination in Russia, and Larisa Boichenko, Chairwoman of the Executive Council of the Karelia Center for Gender Studies, presented a lecture on the implementation of CEDAW in the Republic of Karelia.
Within the framework of the discussion, representatives of governmental institutions shared their ideas on the perspectives of an integration of gender approach in the regions of Russia. They acknowledged the significant contribution of Karelia women’s NGOs in the development and implementation of the mechanisms of gender equality, such as the Commission on the Status of Women, Republican Women’s Forum, regular events on women’s issues in general and on the issue of violence against women in particular.
