International Treaties

International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights: Acceded to on 20 November 1991 with no reservations. Entered into force on 20 February 1992. The Optional Protocol was acceded to on 20 November 1991 with no reservations and entered into force on 20 February 1992. The Second Optional Protocol was ratified on 27 March 2002 with no reservations. Entered into force on 27 June 2002.

International Covenant on Economic, Social & Cultural Rights: Acceded to on 20 November 1991 with no reservations. Entered into force on 20 February 1992.

Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women: Acceded to on 18 January 1994 with no reservations. Entered into force on 17 February 1994. The Optional Protocol was signed on 8 September 2000.

International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination: Ratified on 10 December 1998 with no reservations. Entered into force on 9 January 1999.

Convention on the Rights of the Child: Acceded to on 31 January 1992 with no reservations. Entered into force on 1 March 1992. The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict was ratified on 20 February 2003 with a declaration. Entered into force on 20 March 2003. No action has been taken on the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography.

Convention against Torture and Other Cruel Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment: Ratified on 1 February 1996 with no reservations. Entered into force on 2 March 1996. No action has been taken on the Optional Protocol.

International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families: No action has been taken.

Convention relating to the Status of Refugees: Acceded to on 28 April 1997 and entered into force on 27 July 1997. The Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees was ratified on the same date. 

Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade, and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery: No action has been taken.

Optional Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children: Ratified on 23 June 2003 with a reservation.

Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: Ratified on 12 May 2003.

ILO Convention No. C29 Forced Labour Convention: Ratified on 26 September 1994.

ILO Convention No. C111 Discrimination (Employment & Occupation) Convention:  Ratified on 26 September 1994.

ILO Convention C143 Migrant Workers (Supplementary Provisions) Convention: No action has been taken. 

ILO Convention No. C182 Concerning the Prohibition & Immediate Action for the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labour: Ratified on 29 September 2003. 

Regional Treaties

Statute of the Council of Europe: Lithuania became a member of the Council of Europe on 14 May 1993.

European Social Charter: Ratified on 29 June 2001 with a declaration. Entered into force on 1 August 2001.

[European] Convention on the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms: Ratified on 20 June 1995 with reservations. Entered into force on the same date. Protocol 1 was ratified on 24 May 1996, Protocols 2-5, 7, 8 and 11 were ratified on 20 June 1995 and Protocol 6 was ratified on 8 July 1999.  Protocol 13, concerning the abolition of the death penalty, was ratified on 29 January 2004.

European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment: Ratified on 26 November 1998, together with Protocol 1 and Protocol 2, with no reservations or declarations.

European Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities: Ratified on 23 March 2000 with no reservations. Entered into force on 1 July 2000.
