International Treaties

International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights:  Ratified on 23 October 2003 with declarations, reservations and objections. Entered into force on 23 December 2003. No action has been taken on either the Optional Protocol or the Second Optional Protocol.

International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights: Ratified on 23 September 2003 with reservations, declarations and objections. Entered into force on 23 December 2003.  

Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women:  Ratified on 20 December 1985 with declarations, reservations and objections. Entered into force on 19 January 1986. The Optional Protocol was ratified on 29 October 2002 and entered into force on 29 January 2003.

Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination: Ratified on 16 September 2002 with reservations, declarations and objections. Entered into force on 16 October 2002.

Convention on the Rights of the Child: Ratified on 4 April 1995 with reservations, declarations and objections. Entered into force on 4 May 1995. The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict was ratified on 4 May 2004 and entered into force on 4 June 2004 with no reservations or declarations. The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography was ratified on 19 August 2002 with reservations, declarations and objections and entered into force on 19 September 2002.

Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment: Ratified on 2 August 1988 with reservations, declarations and objections. No action has been taken on the Optional Protocol.

International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families: Signed only on 13 January 1999.

Convention relating to the Status of Refugees: Ratified on 30 March 1962 with reservations and declarations. The Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees was acceded to on 31 July 1968 with declarations and reservations

Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery, the Slave Trade, and Institutions and Practices Similar to Slavery: Ratified on 17 July 1964.

Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime: Ratified on 25 March 2003. The Protocol entered into force on 25 December 2003.  

Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court: No action has been taken. 

ILO C29 Forced Labor Convention: Ratified on 30 October 1998.

ILO C111 Discrimination (Employment and Occupation) Convention: Ratified on 19 July 1967.  

ILO Convention C143 Migrant Workers (Supplementary Provisions) Convention: No action has been taken.

ILO C182 Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention: Ratified on 2 August 2001.

Regional Treaties

Statute of the Council of Europe: Acceded to on 13 April 1950.

European Social Charter (revised): No action has been taken.

(European) Convention on the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms: Ratified on 18 May 1954 and entered into force on the same date. Protocol 1 was ratified on 18 May 1954, Protocols 2 and 3 were ratified on 25 March 1968, Protocol 5 was ratified on 20 December 1971, Protocol 6 was ratified on 12 November 2003, Protocol 8 was ratified on 19 September 1989 and Protocol 11 was ratified on 11 July 1997.

European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment:  Ratified on 26 February 1988 with no reservations or declarations and entered into force on 1 February 1989. Protocol No. 1 was ratified on 17 September 1997 and entered into force on 1 March 2002. Protocol No. 2 was ratified on 17 September 1997 and entered into force on 1 March 2002.

 

(European) Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities: No action has been taken.
