Turkey: Government to Reconsider Bill to Pardon Rapists after Widespread Protests

The Turkish Prime Minister has withdrawn a bill that would have pardoned men who sexually assault minors if they marry their victims. The proposed bill drew intense opposition in Turkey because many believed the bill “would legitimise statutory rape and encourage the practice of taking child brides.” The bill will now be reconsidered by a parliamentary commission.
