Turkey First to Ratify Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women

On the International Day against Violence against Women, Turkey’s parliament became the first to approve ratification of the Council of Europe’s Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women. The Convention was adopted in May 2011 and ratified by Turkey’s unicameral parliament on 25 November, 2011. Only 16 other countries have signed the convention. Most recently, Ukraine signed on 7 November, 2011. Other signatories include: Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Montenegro, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden.
