On March 8, International Women’s Day, the UN Special Rapporteurs on freedom of expression and violence against women called on “governments, companies and civil society organisations to tackle online gender-based abuse and violence, while also safeguarding freedom of expression.” The experts said that threats of physical and sexual violence, online stalking and other attempts to intimidate women on the internet “chill and disrupt the online participation” of women, including journalists, human rights defenders, artists and others.
