United Nations: Special Rapporteur to Investigate Violence Against Women in India

In a reaction to the rising numbers of reported cases of violence against women in India, the United Nations (U.N.) is sending its Special Rapporteur on violence against women, Rashida Manjoo, to investigate the situation there. During her 10-day visit, the Special Rapporteur will travel to various states to meet with local authorities and civil society organizations.

Women in India are still facing abuse in its largely patriarchal society, including female feticide, “honour” killings, rape, acid attacks, and trafficking. However, Ms. Manjoo says, “I believe India is in a unique moment in history to address the issue of violence against women and to further advance women’s rights in the country." Her findings will be reported to the U.N. Human Rights Council.
